Challenge
Manual download management took hours each week
Merchants Insurance Group used to manage its own translation processes to send policy and direct bill commission statement data to its agents. The work took considerable time every week, and one position was primarily dedicated to managing download.
Even with that effort, many of Merchants’ agents weren’t downloading. The carrier needed to automate download management to save time and give its agents better service.

Policy and claims information arrives securely in agents’ systems in ACORD AL3 and XML formats, and automating the exchange eases the IT burden for Merchants.

Since automating download, Merchants’ agents have noticed data that is more accurate and easier to use. “We have seen a marked reduction in critical data mapping issues since implementing Ivans Download,” said Tom Tempeny, Director, Corporate Services, Merchants Insurance Group. “By eliminating key strokes, we are also delivering more accurate information to our agents, which helps mitigate liability issues for us and our agents.”
Agency adoption of download has grown, too. With more than 34,000 independent agents already using connectivity from Applied, little training or education was needed. “Before [Applied], we had a position that was primarily dedicated to managing download,” said Harsch. “Now that we are fully automated with Ivans Download, we have been able to reallocate that resource to help with other internal IT priorities.”
Merchants continues to encourage download among all of its agents through customer visits, bulletins, and press releases.
